Bringing a New Baby into Your Pet’s Home

Bringing A New Baby Into Your Pet's Home

This is my amazing granddaughter and her very best friend and protector Scout.  Scout is a very well behaved and beautiful German Shepherd and she adores our granddaughter and is ever so gentle around her.  From the moment the kids found out that a baby was on the way, they began to prepare Scout for the transition. The result is that baby and pet have become best friends and nobody ever has to worry about the safety of our granddaughter when Scout is around.  Here are some tips you can follow to get ready for the arrival of your new bundle of joy.

When you find out a baby is on the way, use the time to work out any basic training or obedience issues.  Make sure the basics are under control. It’s much easier to deal with issues now instead of waiting until you get home from the hospital.  There are even free or low cost workshops for expecting parents with four legged family members.

Consider setting up your baby’s room or nursery early on and bring in things like diapers, wipes, bottles and other essentials so your pet can get used to the new smells.

If you have friends with infants, do some dry runs and immediately address any signs of aggression or misbehavior on the part of your pet.

Before you bring the baby into the house, bring a blanket or other item home so your pet can get used to the baby’s scent.  Maybe consider bringing a new toy for your pet to help make the day extra special and positive.

If you have a cat, be sure that you wear gloves while changing the litter box, wash your hands carefully and never let your baby get close to the cat box.  Dogs seem to love dirty diapers so make sure you have a good diaper pail that can’t be opened by a curious pet looking for a new snack experience.

Finally, after you bring your new baby home be sure to set aside some time every day just for your pet.  Even a few minutes a day will help control any potential jealousy.

When you take the time to properly introduce your pet to your new baby, the payoff will be a lifetime relationship of unconditional love.
